All right, so I've finally gotten around to patching together a background for my little cut-out of Fang, the demon cat in a now-human form. But I'm not quite content, so I'm going to post what I've accomplished so far and see if anyone else has any ideas to help me along with this project.
First off, this image has flaws that the actual picture doesn't have, because digital cameras suck. Parts of the image are blurred, there are highlights where there shouldn't be highlights, and the colors are slightly off. When I tried to saturate the colors in the picture so that I could bring the warmth of the reds back, the blue became too bright. Because, for some reason, everything digital just loves blue but likes to suck the color out of everything else. The frame of the door, and yes, it is a door and not a window, is supposed to be closer to black, not purple. I did run over the dark brown I'd originally laid down with a very dark shade of blue to make it pop out a bit, but it shouldn't look the way it does here. Also, Fang's eyes are supposed to be more orange than yellow. And just to clarify further, the door shouldn't have all those light flecks. I just really plastered on the colored pencils and many layers makes it look kind of shiny and my camera picked up on that trait.
Anyway, here's my problem. I still think the picture looks too basic. It just doesn't look finished to me. I still have ideas, but I wanted to bounce them off of anyone who will listen, so here goes.
The first things I want to do is give Fang a shadow that will pool from his feet to reflect on the door, as well as give the door some kind of door some kind of door knocker. If the door's design will allow for it. Which I doubt. I might have to settle for a simple doorknob.
Then, as far as the background goes, I wanted to elaborate on the curling tendrils at the bottom left. Perhaps bring them back around into the picture and behind the top of the door? And then what? I was thinking of throwing some kind of small, winged demon into the tendril-y mix, like birds borne upon the wind, but I'm not sure what. Maybe some kind of modified bat thingy? I want to take this moment that there is more room on the left than can be seen here, since I have not yet cropped the original picture the way I have the photograph. I also haven't glued down the pieces, so I can still move stuff around.
Then there are the dots of gold glitter. These were already on the piece of scrapbook paper, but I own gold glitter so I can add more dots. I think I'm going to extend the three dots at the top left of the door downward, so the cut-off doesn't seem so abrupt and it flows better.
And that's all I've got for now. I would love to hear new ideas, as well as critique considering my old ones, because I'm kind of stalled right now.
