You awake in a cold grey room on the floor. It is 8x8 and there is a bed in one corner, and an apple on the pillow. Bars block the only exit and there is nothing else in your small room. There are a few scratchings on the west wall recording time other prisoners have spent here. What do you do?

I get up, looking around the room. I feel cold. I decide to go over to the west wall to observe the scratches more closely.

Under the various recordings of days there is one that would catch your eye. "look under the mattress"

I get up, deciding to take the message's advice, and look under the mattress.

You are wise to do this, and among the wooden boarding you find a dusty old lockbox. The keyhole is rusted and this object is obviously very old.

I brush off the dust from the lockbox, inspecting its outside for anything peculiar before I making a decision to open it or not....

At a first glance there would appear to be nothing strange about the outside of the box...

I don't 'glance' at the outside of the box. I study it. Anything interesting about it?

Not much. Just a few scratches from previous owners and very worn-down corners.

OK, I decide to open it.

On top of your strange surroundings and and awakening in a foreign place, the lockbox is locked! You shall have to find the key or another method of opening it...

I attempt to break the lock by smashing it against the wall.

Despite your best efforts the lock does not break, and you stub your finger accidentaly.

"damnit..." I hold my hurt finger until the pain diminishes. I'd have to find something to open it with. I pick up the apple, moving it aside, and decide to see if my bed has any other hidden treasures....

On the bed's top is nothing of interest of of use, just some simple sheets and a pillow.
