No, I'm just saying that if you were THAT GOOD, no one would have ever suspected you to be a cat-burglar by night. After all, if you're a master thief, you're not going to advertise it or anything. So, even after you die, they wouldn't figure out that you were a thief, and your amazing abilities as a master thief would fade away into the shadows of history....
It's only the ones who get caught that are known as thieves.

Well, he WAS really good, but he had that psychological issue after 5 days a stranger. I mean, it was really understandable. Had he not had that traumatizing experience, he would have still been a perfect master thief.
The other difference is that Trilby left a calling card, which is, I suppose, the only way you could be a master thief AND have people know about you (and thus be remembered). the only problem with leaving a calling card is that if you are ever caught (like Trilby was), the police would know exactly how many heists you pulled off, and rather than serving one sentence for one theft, you'd be serving for multiple thefts.
