The Slytherins pass by wordlessly, Severus lagging behind a little. He has never felt that comfortable in their company. But, they are the only group with whom he has ever felt some semblance of belonging. He watches ahead as Avery on Rosier shove each other playfully, then glances at Lucius. The pillar of the group. The epitome of pureblood aristocracy. Severus has always had a subtle fascination with him. And, perhaps, quiet envy.
Lucius meets his gaze with a brief, quizzical look, then turns back around, his long hair swishing as he walks. Soon the group drifts father ahead, weaving in and out through the mass of students until they are no longer visible. Severus does not attempt to catch up. He is last to enter the castle. As the great doors seal behind him, he feels as though he’s being shut inside prison. He treads softly to the doors leading into the Great Hall. But before he can touch the handle, he is stopped by a voice.
“Good evening, Severus.”
He turns his head. “Good evening, Headmaster.” he rasps, a little startled, “Why so—“
“Late? I had some business that needed tending to.” Dumbledore replies, lightly. Severus nods. “I see.” There is a pause. In which time, the Headmaster seems to study the young lad before him.
“I’m afraid I must ask you, Severus, if there is anything would like to tell me.” Dumbledore says, gently.
Severus’ eyes sink to the stone floor. His thoughts drift to the deaths of his parents, to the debts they both left him, to the rumors flying amidst his peers . . . to the mark on his arm. “No, professor.” he says, quietly, “Nothing.” Dumbledore nods slowly, his pale blue eyes locked on to Severus. “Very well. After you, then.” he replies, opening the door.

Severus strides into the Great Hall, apparently not wanting to spend more time with Dumbledore than strictly necessary. The headmaster looks on after him as he makes his way to his house table. After a moment, he walks on to take his place at the staff table.

*Strolls over to the Slytherin table, finds a long row of empty seats, and slides down them, stops next to another girl* Early, again? What's your problem? *Without waiting for an answer, takes out a book and begins reading*

Dumbledore turns to Rene, smiling pleasantly. “Why certainly, Ms. Jacobson.” he says. With that he sweeps off to the doors of the Great Hall, Rene following behind him. When the doors are safely shut behind him, he inquires calmly of her, “Now, what is that you to see me about, my dear?”

((what I mean is that whether Rene or Pan, or mya, or myself says it really isn't the point. the point is to ask dumbledore if he can teach or not. So I'm just posing the question since Rene took too long))
